Does it hurt to have a filling?

by | 4 Mar 2026

Short answer: usually no, or just a little.
Modern fillings are way more comfortable than their reputation. 😌🦷

What it actually feels like

  • Before the filling:
You’ll get local anesthetic, so the tooth and gum go numb. At TRUSTDental we can make the injections as pain-free as possible.
  • During:
    • Pressure and vibration, not pain
    • You might feel water spray or hear drilling noises (annoying, but not painful)
  • If the cavity is shallow:
Sometimes it’s mild or painless even with minimal numbing.

After the filling

  • Normal:
    • Mild soreness or sensitivity to cold/pressure for a few days
  • Less common:
    • Jaw soreness from keeping your mouth open
  • Not normal:
    • Severe pain
    • Pain that worsens after a week
    • Sharp pain when biting (could mean the filling is too high)

When it might hurt more

  • Very deep cavity close to the nerve
  • Tooth already infected or inflamed
  • Anxiety (pain feels worse when you’re tense)

πŸ‘‰ Even then, dentists can give extra numbing or take breaks. You’re not stuck suffering.

Pro tip

Tell the dentist right away if you feel anything sharp β€” they want to know and can fix it instantly.
