Short answer: usually no, or just a little.
Modern fillings are way more comfortable than their reputation. ππ¦·
What it actually feels like
- Before the filling:
Youβll get local anesthetic, so the tooth and gum go numb. At TRUSTDental we can make the injections as pain-free as possible. - During:
- Pressure and vibration, not pain
- You might feel water spray or hear drilling noises (annoying, but not painful)
- If the cavity is shallow:
Sometimes itβs mild or painless even with minimal numbing.
After the filling
- Normal:
- Mild soreness or sensitivity to cold/pressure for a few days
- Less common:
- Jaw soreness from keeping your mouth open
- Not normal:
- Severe pain
- Pain that worsens after a week
- Sharp pain when biting (could mean the filling is too high)
When it might hurt more
- Very deep cavity close to the nerve
- Tooth already infected or inflamed
- Anxiety (pain feels worse when youβre tense)
π Even then, dentists can give extra numbing or take breaks. Youβre not stuck suffering.
