A veneer and a crown are both dental restorations, but they serve different purposes and cover different portions of the tooth.
โ Veneer
What it is:
A thin shell of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of a tooth.
Covers:
Only the front (visible) side of the tooth.
Used for:
Cosmetic changes (shape, color, size)
Minor chips or cracks
Closing small gaps
Improving overall appearance of front teeth
Tooth preparation:
Minimalโonly a small amount of enamel is removed.
Advantages
Minimal loss of tooth structure to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome
Disadvantages
May have to compromise final desired aesthetic outcome as limited to how it can change the shape and position of the front teeth.

โ Crown
What it is:
A cap that covers the entire tooth above the gumline.
Covers:
All sides of the tooth.
Used for:
Teeth with large cavities,
Severe fractures or cracks
Root-canalโtreated teeth (they become weaker)
Teeth that need major shape/strength restoration
Tooth preparation:
More extensiveโmore tooth structure is reduced to make room for the crown
Advantages
Much more scope in achieving the desired aesthetic result
Disadvantages
Much greater tooth loss and with a higher risk that the crowned teeth may need root canal treatment in the future.
