Why do I have bad breath even though I brush?

by | 15 Sep 2026

Brushing helps, but bad breath (halitosis) can come from areas your toothbrush can’t reach or other causes.

Common Reasons:

  1. Tongue bacteria – The tongue harbours bacteria that produce odour; brushing or scraping your tongue helps.
  2. Flossing missed – Food and plaque between teeth can cause bad breath.
  3. Gum disease – Infection in gums can create persistent odour.
  4. Dry mouth – Saliva helps wash away bacteria; dehydration or certain medications reduce saliva.
  5. Diet and habits – Garlic, onions, coffee, and smoking can linger in breath.
  6. Medical conditions – Sinus infections, acid reflux, or diabetes can contribute.

βœ… How to Fix It:

  • Brush teeth twice daily and clean your tongue
  • Floss or use interdental brushes daily
  • Stay hydrated
  • Visit your dentist regularly to check for gum disease or cavities

Even with brushing, bad breath is often a sign that other areas need attention.
