Why do I have toothache?

A toothache can happen for many different reasons, and the exact cause can only be confirmed by a dentist.

Common causes include:

  • Tooth decay (a cavity)
  • Infection or abscess
  • Gum disease
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • Sensitivity from exposed tooth roots or enamel wear
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Food stuck between teeth causing pressure or inflammation

Because tooth pain is your body’s way of warning that something isn’t right, it’s best to get it checked by a professional dentist as soon as possible – especially if the pain is severe, keeps coming back, or is accompanied by swelling or fever.
